Does a navy blue sofa work in a small room?

Yes, though it's worth thinking about balance. Navy is a strong colour, so in a smaller room it's best to keep walls and flooring lighter to avoid the sofa dominating the space. A 1- or 2-seater in navy velvet, rather than a corner sofa, is usually the better fit for a compact living room or first flat.

How do I look after a velvet sofa?

Velvet holds colour well and has a soft, tactile finish, but it does show pressure marks where you sit, which can be brushed out with a soft-bristled brush in the direction of the pile.
